Angee Baker (Vice President, Planning and Strategic Alliances, SOLINET). Baker is Vice President Planning and Strategic Alliances at SOLINET (Southeastern Library Network), a consortium of more than 800 libraries and archives in ten Southeastern states and the Caribbean. She developed SOLINET's programs for Library Products and Services (licensing) and Digital Library Services. She is experienced in product management/licensing, business development, strategic planning, market research, and sales. Major initiatives at SOLINET include a national offer for CIS/Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe, Congressional and Statistical Universe, as well as McGraw-Hill's AccessScience product. Ms. Baker came to SOLINET in the fall of 1997 from the Thomson Reference Group where she had several key management positions including licensing and the development of GaleNet; concluding her tenure as Vice President of Market Development for Gale Research and Information Access Company. Amy Benson (Coordinator, New England Digital Library, NELINET, Inc.) Benson was recently appointed Coordinator of the New England Digital Library, a program of NELINET. In her new position she will oversee the launch of a collaborative effort involving libraries, archives, museums, historical societies, and other organizations to coordinate and manage the creation, storage, access, and maintenance of a web-based digital library of historical, cultural, economic, and scientific resources related to New England. Previously at NELINET Benson spent five years as Consulting Librarian for Technical Services in which she provided training, support, and consultation in the areas of cataloging, technical services, and related technologies. She recently helped develop and write Cataloging Internet Resources using MARC 21 and AACR2, an online course offered by the OCLC Institute. Prior to coming to NELINET she worked at Harvard's Widener and Houghton libraries. She holds a BA in French and Modern Languages from Beloit College, an MSLS from Simmons College, and an EdM from Harvard University. Deb deBruijn (Executive Director, Canadian National Site Licensing Project). As Executive Director, deBruijn manages an initiative of 64 Canadian universities to license electronic versions of scholarly publications for academic researchers to bolster Canada's capacity for research and innovation. Prior to joining the CNSLP in January 2000, deBruijn served as Manager of the British Columbia Electronic Library Network (a consortium of 32 academic libraries) and held several positions with the University of Calgary Library, ranging from reference librarian to Manager of Network and Microcomputer Services. DeBruijn has a Master of Library Science degree from the University of British Columbia, and a BA in English from the University of Calgary. She has served on numerous executives and task forces of national and provincial library associations in Canada, including a term as Treasurer of the Canadian Library Association from 1993-1995. Most recently, she served on the Canadian Library Association's Presidential Commission on "Writing the Future: Shaping the Canadian Library Association for the 21st Century." Tommaso Giordano (Deputy Director, Library, European University Institute, Italy). Dr. Giordano began his career as a librarian in 1972. He has served as Deputy Director of the Library at the EUI since 1983. He is widely experienced in library cooperation and networking issues, and has had numerous consulting commissions as an international library expert . He contributed to the development of the Italian Library Network (SBN) and to others cooperative projects in Europe, Asia and Latin America. He has been President of The Italian Library Association and a member of the executive committee and Honorary Treasurer of EBLIDA (European Bureau of library , Information and Documentation Associations). Giordano is also currently External Professor in Library Management at the Univerity of Venice and is the author of many publications; his recent work deals with copyright and licenses, digital libraries, and electronic resource sharing. Arnold Hirshon (Executive Director, NELINET, Inc.). As Executive Director of NELINET, Inc. since 1999, Hirshon launched NELINET's Consulting Solutions, initiated the New England Digital Library and the NELINET Digital Library Services, and expanded the NELINET Educational Services. Previously, Hirshon served as Vice Provost for Information Resources (chief information officer) at Lehigh University, where he was the founder and first chairperson of the Pennsylvania Academic Library Consortium, Inc. (PALCI). Hirshon also served as University Librarian at Wright State University, where he was active in the early development of OhioLINK. Hirshon also served as Associate Director at Virginia Commonwealth University Libraries. He was highly involved in the development of the Triangle Research Libraries Network as Assistant Head of the Cataloging Department at Duke University. Hirshon served as president of the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services (ALCTS). His substantial publication record includes monographs, book chapters and articles, including recent articles about library consortia in the Journal of Library Administration, the Journal of Academic Librarianship, and Information Technology and Libraries. Hirshon was Editor of the Library Consortia Management: An International Journal, and an active early participant in the International Coalition of Library Consortia (ICOLC). For ICOLC he was the editor of the 1998 "Statement of Current Perspective and Preferred Practices for the Selection and Purchase of Electronic Information." Warren Holder (Electronic Information Resources Co-ordinator, University of Toronto, Canada). Holder has been a librarian at the University of Toronto since 1978. He currently is the Electronic Information Resources Co-ordinator with responsibility for identifying content, negotiating site licenses and vetting legal agreements that will allow access to electronic resources for the faculty, staff and students at the University of Toronto. Previously, Holder was been the Head of the Undergraduate Library, and the Head of the Circulation Department of the Robarts Graduate Library. Holder currently is co-chair of the Ontario Council Of University Libraries Information Resources Committee, and is a member of the steering committee of the Consortium Of Ontario Libraries. Dan Iddings (Executive Director, Pennsylvania Academic Library Consortium, Inc.[PALCI]). The Executive Director of PALCI since 1999, Iddings previously was the Assistant Director for Automated and Networked Services at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, in which he was the project director for the Three Rivers Free-Net and the Electronic Information Network. Previously, Iddings worked with RMG Consultants, Inc. and at NOTIS Systems, Inc. (1990-92). Iddings is active in the American Library Association and the Library Information Technology Association, and has been active in the Coalition for Networked Information, the American Society for Information Science, and the National Information Standards Organization. David Kohl (Dean and University Librarian, and Director of the Digital Press, University of Cincinnati). Kohl's professional career includes service at the University of Colorado at Boulder, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Washington State University. He is a past president of RUSA (Reference and User Services Association of the American Library Association), a past chair of the OCLC Research Libraries Advisory Committee, the Association of Research Libraries delegate to the IFLA Interlending and Document Delivery Section, and he recently concluded 12 years as Reference Reviews editor for Reference and User Services Quarterly. Kohl served two terms as chair of the OhioLINK Library Administrative Council. Margaret Landesman (Head, Collection Development, University of Utah). Landesman is the Head of Collection Development at Marriott Library, University of Utah. She Co-Chairs the Utah Academic Library Consortium's Collection Development Committee, and she serves on the Steering Committee for Pioneer (the Online Library of Utah) as a member of the Big 12 Plus Collection Development Committee. Landesman is active within the International Coalition of Library Consortia. Her favorite activity is promoting SPARC, the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition. Landesman received the Utah Library Associations Librarian of the Year Award in 1996 for her early efforts in creating state-wide fulltext access to journals. With Johann van Reenen from the University of New Mexiico, she co-authored an article in the Journal of Electronic Publishing on "Creating Convergence." Landesman also edits a column called "Heard on the Net" for the Charleston Adviser and writes "Sense and Sensibility," a column for Against the Grain. Kate Nevins (Executive Director, SOLINET). Nevins is the Executive Director of SOLINET, a regional cooperative serving over 1500 libraries in the ten southern states of the United States. During her seven years at SOLINET, the cooperative has significantly diversified programs to support member libraries' needs for e-information, provide training and continuing education in a range of topics, and facilitate cooperation among libraries in the region. Nevins previously held positions at OCLC, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, and Christiansted Public Library in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Nevins has also been very active professionally, including as President of the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (a division of the American Library Association serving cooperatives and consortia), as Councilor-at-Large of the American Library Association Council, and as a Member of the OCLC Strategic Directions and Governance Council. Kjell Nilsson (Director, BIBSAM - The Royal Library's Office for National Planning and Co-ordination, Swedish National Library, Sweden). Since July 1988, Nilsson has been the Director of BIBSAM, the Royal Library's Department of National Coordination and Development. For several years he has been taking an active part in the standardization work of the Swedish Standards Institute, and is currently serving as the chairman of the Committee on Statistics and Performance Evaluation, SC8, within ISO TC 46, Information and Documentation. Merryll S. Penson (Executive Director for Library Services, GALILEO). Penson has been at GALILEO since 2000. Previously she was Associate University Librarian for Public Services at the University of Georgia, Director of Libraries at Columbus State University (Georgia), and Associate Director for Collection Management at Virginia Commonwealth University. Penson is a past President of the OCLC Users Council, and has served as a member of the Board of Directors of SOLINET. Barbara Preece (Executive Director, Boston Library Consortium) Preece has been Executive Director of the Boston Library Consortium since 2000. Previously, she held a number of positions at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) including Acting Associate Dean for Technical and Automated Services, Director of Systems Services, and Assistant Access Services Librarian. Earlier, she served as Coordinator of Technical and Automated Services at Shawnee Library System (Illinois) where she implemented the system's first integrated library system that served an 18 county multitype library network. Professionally, Preece is active in the American Library Association's Library Administration and Management Association, and she served as the editor for Library Administration & Management, the association's journal. She has written extensively in the area of patron initiated interlibrary loan and document delivery. Preece served as chair of the Interlibrary Loan Group of the Big Twelve Plus and as a member of the Illinois Library Computer Systems Organization (ILCSO) Systems Assessment Task Force during her tenure at SIUC. Joan Rapp (Executive Director: University Libraries, University of Cape Town, South Africa). Rapp has been Executive Director of Libraries at the University of Cape Town since 1998. Prior to that time she was Director of Libraries at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She has also held positions at San Diego State, Temple, and Rutgers Universities. Rapp has an MLS from Rutgers University, an MBA from Southern Illinois University, and an MA from the University of Washington. She has been involved in consortia in both the U.S. (MOBIUS, MERLIN, and MLNC) and South Africa (CALICO and COSALC). Rapp was a member of the Board of Directors of the Center for Research Libraries from 1992-1998. Tom Sanville (Executive Director, OhioLINK) has been the Executive Director of OhioLINK since July 1992. The program now serves 79 member and participating institutions with a union catalog equipped with a statewide patron-initiated borrowing system, over 100 reference and research databases, an electronic journal center that currently aggregates over 3,000 titles from the collections of a growing number of publishers, and Digital Media Center. Sanville was the founder and has served as permanent chair of the International Coalition of Library Consortia (ICOLC) since its inception. Sanville was the Vice President of Marketing for Online Computer Library Center (OCLC), Inc from 1981-1991. He has a B.S. from the Georgia Institute of Technology and an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan. Monika Segbert (Consultant, Electronic Information for Libraries: eIFL). Monika Segbert provides advice and management expertise to multi-national projects in the cultural sector. She currently works with the Soros Foundation to create a multi-country consortium of library consortia in 40+ "transition" countries to harness their buying power for affordable access to electronic journals. Previously she was the team leader of the EU-Tacis project for the Creation of an Information System for the Russian State Library. From 1995 to 1998 she worked with the European Commission DG XIII Telematics for Libraries programme, with primary responsibility for developing research cooperation for the sector with the accession countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Andrei Volgin. In 1999, Andrei Volgin and his wife Elena founded Adamant Media, a U.S. company that builds the world's largest collection of electronic books in cooperation with the Russian State Library and Russian National Library. The company has already converted over 37,000 books and 4,000 music scores in digital form, and currently scans over 100 public domain works daily. Hennie Viljoen (Senior Director, Library Services, University of Stellenbosch, South Africa). Viljoen started his career in 1965, working in the University Library of the Potchefstroom University. After several promotions, including as Head of Acquisitions, he moved to the University of the Orange Free State in Bloemfontein as Senior Lecturer, responsible for teaching Library Management. In 1981 he was appointed as Deputy University Librarian, University of Stellenbosch. In 1984 he was appointed Director of Library Services, and is since 1994 Senior Director Library Services , a position he still holds. He is also a part-time lecturer (was appointed as Professor in 1987), mostly for post-graduate courses in the Department of Information Science. Viljoen has published widely on several topics. He was a co-founder of the Cape Library Cooperative (Calico), and served two terms as the Chair of its Council of Library Directors, takes a leading role within cooperative developments in South Africa. Over the past thirty years Viljoen has contributed extensively to library activities in South Africa and abroad. He served as President from 1994 to 1996 of the South African Institute of Library and Information Science, and he is currently contributing to the Electronic Information for Libraries (eIFL) project of the Open Society Institute (OSI). Alicia Wise (Assistant DNER Director, Joint Information Systems Committee, UK) Wise is Assistant Director of the United Kingdom's Distributed National Electronic Resource (developed by the Joint Information Systems Committee). In this role she provides strategic leadership for national electronic collections development and management. Her Ph.D. in Anthropology is from the University of North Carolina and her research specialties include computer applications in archaeology, human ecology, and the study of culture change. She has authored good practice guidelines for the digital preservation of aerial photographs, excavation records, geographic information systems, and satellite images.
