Description: Do you sometimes have difficulty assigning Library of Congress subject headings? Learn the basic principles behind LCSH, including how to select subject terms and construct headings with subdivisions. Understand how to interpret LC subject authority records in both print and MARC formats. This course will introduce supplemental resources used in the creation of subject headings.
You will learn about:
  • Basic principles of subject heading construction
  • Interpreting print and online subject authority records
  • Pattern headings
  • Subdivisions
  • MARC tagging of subject headings
  • Supplemental resources
Time: Five hours
Location: This full day "Customized Training" session can be brought to your library at any time.
Who should attend: Beginning subject cataloging staff and experienced cataloging staff wishing a refresher course on basic subject heading construction.
