| Description: |
OCLC searching isn’t just 3,2,2,1 any more. OCLC traditional
derived searching is still available, but now catalogers can zero
in on their target bibliographic or authority records using several
more advanced techniques, including powerful Boolean keyword searching,
phrase browsing, subject searching, and qualifiers. OCLC has added
new features to make those “hard to find” items hard
to find no longer.
This hands-on class will focus on learning and
using effective searching techniques for bibliographic and authority
records in OCLC Connexion (Client and Browser). Client and Browser
users can work in their chosen interface. |
| You will learn about: |
- Be able to identify the most appropriate search method and
strategy for a given situation
- Understand the pros and cons
of using search and browse (scan) commands
- Understand OCLC
searching and browsing syntax and use it effectively
- Become
familiar with indexes for searching and browsing and their
use
- Be able to use qualifiers, wildcards, and truncation
effectively
- Be able to find records by criteria such as type
