Reports |
Using the Telecommunications
Information System (TIS), OCLC users can track and analyze their connect
time to the OCLC system using reports provided by OCLC. Report data
is updated monthly.
All reports can be downloaded as comma delimited files and opened
in a spreadsheet. They can also be copied and pasted into a spreadsheet.
Putting the report data in a spreadsheet allows the library to do
further analysis and reports over time based on the raw statistics
provided by OCLC.
Reports accessible to OCLC users (4 reports)
- The Last-12-month Telecommunications Report (Instutiton
and Product) shows usage quantities and patterns
for each OCLC product by month, e.g. Passport, Connexion Client,
CatME, ILLWeb, etc.
- The Last-3-month Telecommunications Report (by Authorization)
shows monthly activity for each authorization number belonging
to the institution. The report includes monthly totals of both
number of sessions and number of hours each authorization spent
connected to OCLC.
- The Last-3-month Telecommunications Report (Authorization
& TM type) shows monthly activity for each user,
totalled by how the connection was terminated. This report allows
the library to identify inappropriate user behavior in terminating
the connection to OCLC. In particular one can identify any authorization
number where the user makes regular use of the inactivity timer,
which may cause the library to continue to incur connect time
charges after the user has completed work on OCLC.
- The Last 30-day Telecommunications Report (Session
Detail) allows the user to choose one day from the
last 30 days and view detailed activity from that day. This report
does not track any use by authorization numbers. It is useful
for tracking daily activity and use patterns, especially if activity
is copied to a spreadsheet and analyzed further.

Reports Available
Through NELINET (3 reports) Contact
NELINET to receive a copy of any of the following reports for
your institution. NELINET staff can discuss the results, and possible
actions based on them, with you.
- The OCLC Price Analysis and Configuration Report
uses the last 12 months of a library's activity to provide comparative
estimates of the annual telecommunications cost using each of
the available access methods: Dial TCP/IP, Connect Time Internet,
Flat Fee Internet, and Dedicated TCP/IP. A statement of your last-12-month
OCLC telecommunications cost is also provided. This report helps
determine if you are using the most cost-effective access method
for your library.
- The Total Telecommunications Traffic for Group Report
reports the library's minimum, average, and maximum monthly connect
time over the past 12 months, broken down by access method. OCLC
estimates a recommended maximum number of simultaneous users,
based on the use reported. This report helps determine the number
of simultaneous users an institution or consortium should have
for the amount of OCLC connect time used over the last year.
Please Note: Before relying on the recommendation
in this report, discuss the results with NELINET. The number recommended
does not always reflect the library's workflow or needs accurately.
- The Last-12-month Summary for all institutions.
This report allows the library to view and analyze use statistics
by access method, product and service. This is the only report
where Passport use is split out for cataloging, ILL, and union
list. In addition, this report shows use of different interfaces
to the same service (e.g. Passport ILL, ILL Web) so that service
totals can be easily totaled. Statistics by access method and
product (without service, e.g. Cataloging, ILL, etc.) are available
to the library directly in the Last-12-month Telecommunications
Report (Institution and Product).
